Personality

Cavapoos reliably produce what their parent breeds promise: the Cavalier's warmth and gentle temperament, with some of the Poodle's intelligence and trainability. They're sociable, affectionate, and generally excellent with children and other pets. They tend to attach closely to their families and don't enjoy being left alone for long periods.

The degree to which Poodle traits (including lower shedding, higher energy, greater trainability) or Cavalier traits (softer temperament, more relaxed exercise needs, higher attachment) dominate varies between individuals and generations. F1 crosses (one Cavalier parent, one Poodle parent) have the most variable outcomes. F1b crosses (backcrossed to Poodle) tend toward Poodle-type coats and characteristics.

They're popular partly for good reasons - genuinely sweet-natured dogs, manageable in size, adaptable to most living situations - and partly for the marketing around "hypoallergenic" properties, which are overstated. Not all Cavapoos shed minimally, and no dog is truly hypoallergenic.

Exercise

One to ninety minutes of daily exercise suits most Cavapoos. They're not high-demand working dogs, but they benefit from variety - walks, play, and some off-lead time. Mental stimulation through training keeps them satisfied.

The exercise level can vary quite a bit between individuals depending on Poodle proportion. A Cavapoo who's more Poodle will need more and will show it if they don't get it. A more Cavalier-leaning individual may be perfectly happy with less.

Weight and Feeding

Weight range varies significantly depending on whether the Poodle parent was a toy or miniature - 5–12 kg. Feed to maintain a healthy body condition score rather than to a specific weight target. Check ribs monthly.

Cavalier-dominant Cavapoos can be prone to weight gain. Overweight dogs have increased risk of heart disease and joint problems - both conditions the breed already carries elevated risk for.

Health

The health section of any Cavapoo guide needs to be honest about both parent breeds, because the inherited health risks from both are real and significant.

Mitral valve disease (MVD) is the most serious concern. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have extraordinarily high rates of MVD - nearly all Cavaliers will develop it to some degree by age ten. The gene is inherited, and Cavapoo offspring can inherit it. The Cavalier Health breeding protocol requires both Cavalier parents to be heart-tested clear by a cardiologist before breeding (and retested annually). Many Cavapoo breeders do not follow this protocol. Ask specifically whether both Cavalier parents have passed cardiac grading under the Cavalier Health scheme. Track Mitral Valve Disease →

Syringomyelia and Chiari-like malformation (CM/SM) is a serious neurological condition common in Cavaliers. The skull is too small for the brain, causing pain and - in syringomyelia - fluid-filled cavities in the spinal cord. Signs include scratching at the neck or shoulder (often when on lead), apparent pain, and changes in posture or gait. MRI screening exists and should be done on Cavalier breeding dogs. Again, not all Cavapoo breeders screen for this.

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) can be inherited from either parent breed. DNA tests are available for Poodle-relevant forms (prcd-PRA, ofa-PRA). Ask whether the Poodle parent has been DNA tested clear. Track Progressive Retinal Atrophy →

Hip dysplasia can come from either parent. BVA hip scoring on Poodle breeding dogs is recommended. Track Hip Dysplasia →

Ear infections are common - the combination of a pendulous ear and a non-shedding coat that traps debris in the ear canal is a reliable path to otitis. Check ears weekly and clean monthly. Track Ear Infections →

Grooming

The coat is the primary ongoing commitment. Cavapoo coats range from loose waves to tight curls, depending on inheritance, and most require professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Between appointments, brushing three to four times a week prevents matting - particularly behind the ears, under the armpits, and between the back legs.

Skipping home brushing for a fortnight is enough for significant matting to develop in some coat types. The result is either a matted dog (uncomfortable, and more expensive to sort) or a close clip that removes several months of growth.

Common Conditions to Watch

  • Heart murmur: annual cardiac assessment from age one (earlier if possible given MVD risk)
  • Scratching at neck/shoulders, apparent pain: CM/SM assessment
  • Ear infections: weekly checks, note discharge, smell, or scratching
  • Eye changes or cloudiness: PRA monitoring
  • Weight: monthly check; overweight increases all breed-specific risks
  • Coat condition: daily brushing, monthly check at skin level for hotspots

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cavapoos really healthier than Cavaliers? Not necessarily. The "hybrid vigour" claim oversimplifies the genetics. A Cavapoo with a Cavalier parent who wasn't health-tested can inherit MVD and CM/SM just as a purebred Cavalier can. The key isn't the crossbreeding itself - it's whether the Cavalier parent was health-tested under the appropriate scheme.

How do I find a responsible Cavapoo breeder? Ask specifically: has the Cavalier parent been heart-tested clear under the Cavalier Health protocol within the last year? Has the Cavalier parent had an MRI for CM/SM? Has the Poodle parent been DNA tested for PRA? A breeder who can answer yes with documentation is doing the right thing. A breeder who doesn't know what these tests are is not.

Do Cavapoos shed? It depends on coat inheritance. Curlier coats shed minimally. Wavier coats shed more. There's no guarantee of coat type until the puppy is older. The claim that Cavapoos are reliably hypoallergenic is exaggerated.

How long do Cavapoos live? 12–15 years is a reasonable expectation, with health-tested lines and good weight management. Given the MVD risk from the Cavalier side, cardiac monitoring is important from middle age onwards.
